Tearfund Australia was founded in 1971 from the Australian Evangelical Alliance, guided by a vision to deliver “practical aid in the context of God's love shown in the Lord Jesus”.
Today, the organisation works with local Christian partners in programmes and projects around the world that support people in overcoming extreme poverty. They also work with Christians across Australia to mobilise biblically shaped responses to poverty and injustice.
“Climate justice is still a hard thing for many Christians to wrap their head around, and how that connects with their faith. So lots of the work that we do in that space is helping people to understand the issue from a Christian faith perspective.” Emma Wyndham Chalmers, Head of Advocacy
Tearfund Australia co-founded Renew our World in 2017, and is the movement’s national expression in Australia. They recently launched We Shall Inherit The Earth; the most comprehensive research on Australian Christians' views about climate change to date.
Global collaboration with Renew our World remains a key goal for Tearfund Australia, especially as political shifts in the country after its “first climate election”, have opened up new opportunities
