Why every degree matters
The IPCC report is a very loud wake-up call, outlining that we need to take urgent action now
to keep warming to 1.5 degrees. Every small increase above this level will have
a devastating effect on humanity and our world. Here are three
reasons why Christians must redouble our efforts to overcome climate change and
lead the global church into action.
1. The poorest and most vulnerable will be hardest hit
We know that God is a God of justice and that His heart is for the poor. The injustice of climate change is that the developed world has released the most greenhouse gasses through industrialisation. Thus their wealth creation has caused the current effects of climate change that we are already witnessing. If they continue with unsustainable consumption then we will experience more droughts, floods, heatwaves and storms - all of which hit people in poverty hardest, even though they're the least responsible. This is unjust. God cares about it and so should we.
2. This is urgent
The report makes it clear that we have only a few years to change our consumption habits or it will be impossible to avert the worst of climate change. We need urgent changes at an unprecedented scale. The positive news is that it's possible. We can still meet the target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees by turning the promises made in the Paris Agreement into concrete plans which are a step up in reach and scale.
